CWAC Count February 2026 – meet at Paardevlei

Bird Watch / Count

Thank you to everyone who turned out for the Coordinated Waterbird Count (CWAC) on 14 February. We had enough feet, hands, eyes and binoculars to count Paardevlei, Dick Dent and Macassar, a huge contribution to the vital data on waterbird life which helps determine changes in distribution and overall numbers, which we submit to the Fitzpatrick Institute of Ornithology at the University of Cape Town.

We are also pleased to report that Steenbras area was also counted earlier in the week, the first time in many years. Thank you to Elana Kellerman at Steenbras who helped us make it happen.

The CWAC counts take place all over the country twice a year during a time window, and have been collecting data since 1992, giving a long term record of the status of our waterbirds. it was a real achievement for SWBC to count four of our local areas this time.
